In-depth Market Analysis

Description:

Developed a comprehensive Tableau dashboard for analyzing the clothing sector in Australia, focusing on expansion opportunities in Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia. The project integrates three key datasets: competitor net profit margins (scraped from annual reports), state-wise industry turnover from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and detailed demographics including population and state distribution (quarterly).

Objectives:

  1. Competitor and Industry Analysis: Evaluate competitor profitability and industry turnover in target states (Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia).
  2. Demographic Integration and Analysis: Blend demographic data with industry figures to calculate per capita profits on a quarterly basis.
  3. Risk Assessment and Forecasting: Assess investment risks and forecast future profitability to identify the best expansion state.

Key Features

  1. Competitor Net Profit Margin Analysis: Analyzes competitor net profit margins in percentage, presented through average margin graphs and box plots for Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, and New South Wales (first dashboard).
  2. Risk Assessment via Distribution Analysis: Utilizes the distribution of financial metrics in box plots to assess investment risks, identifying states with less skewed distributions as safer investment options (first dashboard).
  3. Monthly Industry Turnover Visualization: Displays aggregated monthly industry turnover data from 2000 to 2015 for each state, sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (second dashboard).
  4. Demographic Data Integration: Merges demographic data including gender, population, and state, with industry turnover to derive per capita turnover, segmented by state (second dashboard).
  5. Per Capita Profit Forecasting with State Filter: Features a 5-year forecast of per capita profits, including a filter for in-depth analysis of each state’s potential beyond the initial targets (third dashboard).

Results

The most crucial aspect of the project was data blending, which standardized turnover to clearly depict each industry by state in per capita terms, needed to make an informed decision. The competitors’ research provided insights into average net profits and their distribution, showing Victoria as a solid contender. Concurrently, the industry analysis reinforced the selection of Victoria as target expansion state.

Victoria also exhibited a net profit margin comparable to the company’s current state (New South Wales), but with a significantly narrower distribution, evident in the box plots. This, along with a favorable 5-year forecast in the state for the clothing industry, presents a compelling direction for the board’s decision-making.
